On February 9th, I finally made the step to update my existing WordPress blog to version 2.7 (tweet).

It’s really not a big deal to update, but still, I hate it somehow – it’s always this annoying routine:

  1. backup the DB (that’s quick & easy),
  2. backup files (took some time, maybe I shouldn’t have used FireFTP for that, because I just found out that it’s a lot faster with FileZilla),
  3. deactivate plugins,
  4. delete files on the server,
  5. download and unpack new version,
  6. upload new version,
  7. activate plugins.

Yaaawwwwnnnn.

One day After I updated to 2.7, a new version 2.7.1 was already available (tweet). I noticed the nice new automatic update feature, but also found out on the WordPress support forum that it needed PHP5 to work.

So I talked to Tim about this… and just two days later, we are now running PHP5. A big thankyou to the guys from all-inkl.com for the quick migration process!

What can I say – the automatic upgrade went just fine (tweet). I still have to go through steps 1 and 2, but the rest is done automatically – very nice. The only problem is that prototype.js is still not compressed, so I have to upload a compressed version with each update. And then there is the thing with tw-sack.js. But apart from that, I am quite satisfied.

The biggest part is updating the plugins. I sometimes make changes to them, and every time you update, you have to do a diff before and then make the changes again – that’s pretty annoying.

And sometimes, you find out pretty late that the plugin is not working – as it happened with Ingoal’s Twitter Updater (which is not hosted on wordpress.org as far as I know and therefore does not show an update note).

Whatever – I must say I really like the new WordPress backend!
