The Domain That Does Not Exist… Actually Exists!
Recently, I was leaving a fake comment on my blog that I wanted to declare as spam to see if my newest plugin would work. As eMail-address, I wanted to use a domain that did not exist. The first one that came to my mind was thisdomaindoesnotexist.com – which actually does. So, I had to use .net instead of .com – that really does NOT exist (so far). … Read entire article »

Joost Discards Software Application – Browsers Ahoy!
Today, I got this email from Joost.com (quoting): Hi Marco In October, we introduced our new website – Joost.com. With our new website, you’re able to watch all of our videos – TV shows, music videos, and films – right in your web browser. At this point, we have decided to discontinue our original Joost software application. As of Friday, Dec. 19th, you will no longer be able to watch videos in the Joost software application – but you will be able to find all of our videos, and more, on Joost.com. Log on to Joost.com today for a complete online video experience! Your friends at Joost (end of quote) I welcome this idea very much – with today’s browser and streaming technology, you do not really need to install … Read entire article »

Google Reader And Embedded Flash Objects
It seems like Google Reader is a little picky when it comes to including and showing embedded flash videos: YouTube movies seem to work fine, but I do not get it to show some other flash movies, e.g. the one shown on wordpress.org for WP 2.7: that one shows fine on my blog as well as on the Feedburner feed – but even though I use the same code for it as I use for YouTube videos, it won’t show in Google Reader. Take a look at this post in Google Groups. [Update from 2008-12-17] OK, here is the answer to my problem (quoting): We have taken a whitelist approach to embedded video, thus we’ll need to include WordPress for its embeds to show up. This should happen in the … Read entire article »

Google Gears Slowing Down WordPress Editor?
Recently, I had the strange feeling that my WordPress editor reacted a little VERY slowly when creating a new post. So, I used the Firefox addon Live HTTP Headers to see what was going on – and found the culprit: every time I opened the editor, Google Gears was pretty busy connecting and downloading. After deactivating it, everything works smoothly again now. Well, I might be wrong, but isn’t Google Gears supposed to speed things up rather than slowing everything down? … Read entire article »

WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane” Released!
The much longed for WordPress 2.7 is out now! You can download it here. Also, check out the official WordPress Blog for what’s new in WP 2.7. Here’s a little video: A nice post that deals with the changes is this one: www.texto.de/texto/wordpress-27-hilfeliste/ (Unfortunately for my international visitors, the above post is only available in German.) I will wait until there are updates for most of my plugins. Self-reminder: “Remember compressing Prototype!” [Update from 2008-12-15] Lorelle VanFossen has some nice upgrade tips for WordPress 2.7 – of course. I should have looked there earlier. Nice article, Lorelle! … Read entire article »

Using WP Cron To Cache External Scripts (Via Plugin)
Recently, Torsten had the very nice idea of caching the Flickr badge script locally with a cron job. I have also seen a similar idea for keeping a local copy of the Google Analytics script at askapache.com. Unfortunately, I am not so familiar with setting up cron jobs on Apache, so I thought it would be easier to use the WordPress built-in cron system. … Read entire article »
