Firefox 3 Released

As of 17th of June, 2008, Firefox 3 is now available on mozilla.com.

I just installed it a couple of hours ago, and so far, I have a very good impression about this new version. It seems to be pretty fast.

The only thing I hate with upgrading is that you will always have to wait until all your beloved addons will be updated and working again. Some can already be tweaked a little and will then work with FF3 - unfortunately, some won’t… I guess I will have to wait a little longer.

At least, an upgrade is always a chance to get rid of old addons that you hardly ever used.

[Update from 2008-06-24]
OK, here is a way how to get some of the old addons working with FF3:

  • Download the XPI installation file of the addon to e.g. your desktop.
  • Open this file with your ZIP application.
  • Within your ZIP application, open “install.rdf” to edit.
  • Look for em:maxVersion=”…”.
  • Change it to em:maxVersion=”3.0.0.*”.
  • Let the ZIP application update that edited file in the archive.
  • Leave your ZIP application.
  • Drag & Drop the XPI file onto Firefox.

For me, it worked at least with the addons Smart Digg Button and Tab Preview.

More updated news from 2008-06-24:
Dust Me Selectors
is now compatible wih FF3 and seems to finally work with Google Sitemap XML files!

[Update from 2008-06-25]
I let Dust Me Selectors examine my website by spidering the sitemap - strangely, it marked twice as much posts as “spidered” as there actually are on my blog…???

Furthermore, I had to slightly alter the sitemap’s XSL stylesheet. I am using the Google Sitemap Generator plugin for WordPress. In the XSL file - that the generated sitemap.xml file links to - there are also links to Google, Yahoo, Sitemaps.org and the author’s blog. If you leave them there, they will also be spidered…???

Dust Me Selectors has ceased working for Firefox 3.0.1. Any suggestions?

Reinstalling seemed to work. Why can’t they issue the download and updates through the Firefox Add-On?

That is something I do not understand, either. This way, you always have to check their website for new releases, which is a little annoying. Putting it on addons.mozilla.org would be much nicer.
